What to wear in Lapland | Family Photographer, Leicester

So you’ve taken the plunge and booked your holiday of a lifetime to Lapland - so EXCITING!!!!

Now it’s only a few weeks and you have absolutely no idea what clothes to pack. When we travelled in 2018, I had so many questions about this and found that there was hardly any information!! So I thought I would put this post together to help you shop for your trip.

First of all, you don’t actually need that much.

Most of the big tour operators will provide you with a snow suit and snow boots when you arrive at your airport or resort, and they are incredibly warm, but what on earth do you wear under them? The stuff that we found really useful was:-

  • Base layer - a long sleeved top and leggings

  • Silk gloves and socks

  • Thermal socks (maybe a couple of pairs in case they get wet)

  • Ski gloves - our tour operator provided these but they were mittens and you really want to be able to use your fingers for all of those photo opportunities!

  • Secondary layer - zipper/jumper and something for your legs

  • Me and my daughter wore fleece lined running leggings over our base layers. My son wore tracksuit bottoms and my husband bought some fleece lined walking trousers from Mountain Warehouse.

  • Woolly hats - your ears will get cold so make sure they are covered!

  • Christmas jumpers!!!

  • Our hotel was full board, mealtimes were extremely relaxed with people removing their snow suits and snow boots. There was no need for alternative footwear - we all walked round in our socks! There were lots of people in jeans and jumpers for the evening meal. We did have evening entertainment and my daughter wore her party dress for this (she’s 5) but I found a sparkly jumper was fine. I did wear my own boots in the evenings as our hotel room was just 100 yds from the restaurant and I wanted to feel like I’d made a bit of an effort!

Our hotel provided a drying cupboard (it was the size of a fridge and we hung our snow suits in it every night) - if you don’t have this it might be wise to take a couple of everything in case you get wet.

Things I took but didn't need were hand warmers - I bought a pack of 40 and they weighed a tonne - they came home unopened. I also took too many dressy clothes; I had no idea just how relaxed it was going to be.

I bought most of our clothes from Decathlon, they had some great guides in the aisles that explained the base and secondary layers. They were also fantastic value!! The bits I couldn't get I picked up from Mountain Warehouse.

Lapland was just absolutely magical - I cried. A lot. So take tissues! You are going to LOVE it.
